The municipality of
Monchique is one of the three councils which
has no direct access to the sea (the others are
Sao Bras de Alportel and Alcoutim). It
is a municipality of the interior integrated
in the sub-region being formed by the municipalities
of Aljezur, Vila
do Bispo, Monchique, Lagos, Portimao, Lagoa
and Silves. The Monchique Chain is an area of great vegetation
diversity, with a much higher rainfall than the
average rate of the Algarve. The climate
is very mild. Due to its exuberant and very varied
vegetation, this council is called "The Garden of the Algarve".
Foia,
at the peak of the mountains, is the highest point of
the Algarve. From up there one can see as far as the Cape St. Vincent,
as far as the Arrabida Chain and as far as
Faro.
Monchique entered History with the presence of the Romans in
the Spa of Caldas de Monchique,
who were attracted by the curative power
of its thermal waters. These mountains started to be populated
slowly in
the following centuries. In the 16th
century Monchique
was already an important settlement. King
D. Sebastiao promised to grant it the statute
of village at that time. The
municipality of Monchique, as almost all the Algarvian
region, depends very much on tourism from the economic point of view.
Craft, the production
of pork sausages and derivates of pork, preserves, liqueurs
and confectionary, honey and arbustus-berry brandy (aguardente de medronho),
are among the best renowned traditional products of the
whole Algarve.
It is a privilege to live here, because of its mild climate,
because of
the purity of its environment. The beautiful
landscape, the sensational panoramic views of
the coast (from Vilamoura to Sagres)
can be seen
frm the southern part of the Chain. The proximity
of an enormous offer of services just a few kilometres
away (Lagos and
Portimao are less
than twenty minutes away, and Faro is less than
an hour's distance) are other aspects to
be taken into account. Looking
